As usual, the Emmy Awards offered its signature mix of glamour and mild controversy. Fortunately for connected viewers, the accompanying social media conversation was as binge-worthy as the night’s big winners. Using Sprinklr Social Listening, we collected data that shows who – and what – drove last night’s digital conversation about the Emmys. The data is drawn from a 24-hour period that began at 5:00pm EST on Sunday.
First, thanks to the not-so-scripted remarks from leading funnymen Dave Chapelle and John Oliver, #dcpublicschools became the unexpected hashtag star of the night, ranking an impressive third in terms of overall mentions. The other top hashtags cover topics ranging from politics to advertisements to, shockingly, actual TV shows.
Next, as this word cloud below demonstrates, the 2017 Emmys will be remembered for the success of new faces (such as Lena Waithe) and established stars (like Nicole Kidman). But perhaps above all, people will recall the surprise cameo of former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
The ranking of the words that popped up the most in relevant social chatter raises an interesting question: which Donald got more Emmys-related attention, Glover or Trump? Considering “Glover” was comfortably in the top 10, it seems likely that he was the Donald that got people talking the most on Twitter – if only for a night.
It was no surprise that Spicer received the most specific Twitter mentions during the night. His unexpected appearance sparked quite a bit of digital chatter (positive, negative, and otherwise) and will serve as a memorable image of the 2017 Emmys.
