Summer and reading have always been linked in my memory. As a kid, the school-issued summer reading list was a lingering hassle that I would tackle just a few days before the new year started.
As I got older and reading became less compulsory (and thus more fun), summer was a time to dive into any book I could get my hands on. I remember lazy weeks at the beach, sitting between my extended family on the sand, all of us reading in silence that was only interrupted by commentary on unexpected plot twists or funny dialogue.
The summer after my freshman year of college, I worked as a lifeguard in a clammy, boisterous indoor pool.
