The Super Bowl is officially half a century old. Over the past 50 years, the event has evolved into the most important evening of the year for the advertising world and, more recently, a big night for social media as well.
Sprinklr turned on its Social Listening tools on Sunday to measure the conversation taking place during the big game.
In total, there were almost two million Super Bowl-related tweets in a 24-hour period. Consumers engaged with the event on multiple screens, watching the game while tweeting about their favorite party dips, ads, and plays. Not to be outdone, brands looked for clever ways to engage customers from social sweepstakes to real-time GIFs.
Read on to find out who Von Miller-ed the competition in each category.
The champs on the gridiron, the Denver Broncos, took the social crown as well with almost half a million mentions.
The star-studded halftime show generated a ton of conversation too, as did pregame advertiser Esurance, which encouraged fans to retweet #EsuranceSweepstakes for a chance to win a million bucks.
While sentiment around both teams was mostly favorable, chatter around the Broncos was noticeably more positive.
The overall social conversation around the Super Bowl was about 64% male and 36% female.
Despite the hype, Peyton Manning beat Cam Newton when it came to the volume of social chatter as well. Dab.
When it comes to talking about brands, we saw a slightly different demographic story. More women were discussing Super Bowl ads than men:
And Esurance won by a long shot:
On the hashtag front, #sb50 trumped all. But the official hashtags from Esurance and Avocados from Mexico deserve a round of applause.
Our data searched specifically for mentions of performers as they related to the Super Bowl. Coldplay topped the list, followed by Gaga’s rendition of the National Anthem, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé. Mentions of “Half Time Show” were noticeably high, likely due to the spectacle of these three megastars on one stage at a time, and the excitement around this being the 50th anniversary of the big game.
